Want to know more about sex in Tokyo?
Hosting 420 million Japanese and almost 5 million foreign tourists each year, Tokyo has its work cut out to provide enough entertainment for all. Fortunately, it does just that and the adult industry is part of this huge economy.
In this guide, we take a look at the variety of ways that Tokyo provides sex services to its residents, tourists and business visitors. From the famous soaplands, image clubs, pink salons and fashion health salons to the KTVs, massage health, red light districts and strip clubs we provide a full review of your options.
Prostitution in Tokyo
Prostitution has been illegal in Japan since the introduction of the Anti-Prostitution Law in 1956. Before this time, the sex industry (known as fūzoku) was a well-managed one reflecting the complex hierarchy of this important aspect of traditional culture.
Even before the occupation of Japan when prostitution for western visitors (including the US military) was popular Japan has long had an association with the trade of women employed for companion services.
Geishas and oiran fulfilled important duties not performed by wives and girlfriends.
Whilst the former are well-known as being forerunners of modern escorts, it was actually not in their job descriptions to perform sexual services.
Understanding the cultural significance and importance of intellectual and refined female company is crucial to understanding the modern role of prostitutes in Japan. Quite dissimilar to their European counterparts, many women throughout Japan’s history were celebrated (and paid) for their talent to entertain, amuse and tend to men rather than simply being a convenient vessel for a quick bang.
This traditional role is reflected in many aspects of prostitution in modern Japan yet remains a mystery to many foreigners, or gaijins.
However, sex itself is of course still big business and Tokyo caters for both a local demand as well as international tourism to sample its adult industry.
The sector is both a diverse and profitable one. Prostitution accounts for an estimated $24 billion each year in Japan.
But, with so many ‘sex’ businesses operating, what is legal and what isn’t?
The legal position is very clear on what is forbidden and what is not.
Prostitution is defined by the authorities as making or receiving payment for coital sex. It is this aspect of the law which allows so many venues to operate legitimately. As long as their services do not include vaginal penetration then they aren’t breaking the law. The result is a mixture of services and trades that offer oral, manual and anal sex as well as other ways to titivate.
As ever, escort services are dressed up as simple companionship where mutually consensual sex may happen as a result of two adults being close. Some agencies go one step further and offer ‘health delivery’ services to their customers.
These are basically out-call services to perform the same functions as ‘health massage’. In these instances, escorts do not offer coital intercourse but rather perform a service of massage, kissing and oral/manual relief as part of a package to treat stress.
The inevitable transaction is merely a ‘donation’ or as the Japanese refer to it, ‘compensated dating’ (enjo-kōsai).
There are no official figures on the number of prostitutes working in Tokyo but as Japan’s capital and largest city, it is estimated that over half of the women working in the industry are set up here. This could be anywhere from 100,000 to 500,000 women.
There are many ways in which these women could be employed from working as escorts to street hookers, hostesses at KTVs or strippers, image club performers to attendants at a soapland or blowjob bar.
The rates for services is equally as varied and depends on where and who you pick up as well as your nationality. Though some venues operate a fair-pricing policy, foreigners (particularly westerners) can be charged more.
Speaking of which, many adult venues in Tokyo do not cater for foreigners. Far from being a blanket racist ban, it does link back to our comments on cultural awareness as well as language barriers. The simple fact is that not all Japanese people speak English and if you don’t have a basic command of the language then you simply can’t access the services.
There is also no avoiding the fact that some establishments prefer to keep their venues local to avoid the problem of cultural misunderstandings.
However, the red-light districts offer huge numbers of opportunities to try your luck but be warned that not all are foreigner friendly and some, unfortunately, may not be safe.
There are some elements of the industry which are under the control of the criminal underworld of the Yakuza and we would strongly recommend that if you are not permitted entry to a venue that you do not cause a disturbance.

Tokyo Escorts Guide
Tokyo’s escorts have a world-class reputation for their professionalism and elite service. As one of the top five global economic hubs, the city has a huge number of business visitors and some companies have a tradition of treating their guests to the services of a premium Japanese call-girl.
As in any major city, there is also a huge demand for escort services for tourists as well as residents and, as a result, there are thousands of escorts working in the city. They range in age, ethnicity and price with several ways to procure their services.
Prices start at around 15,000 Yen ($135) per hour. High class escorts can cost up to 80,000 Yen ($700) per hour with the most elite charging for a minimum booking of 12 hours.
There are many escort directories where courtesans can be found (either posting independently or as part of an agency).
As an alternative, you can join the popular ‘hookup sites’ Adult Friend Finder or C-Date. Some escorts ply their trade on these sites, as well as a number of ordinary women looking for casual sex. YMMV!
Delivery Health Services
Known as ‘hotel health’ or deriheru, delivery health services can be an outcall offering from massage health parlours or soaplands. Services are a pretty standard offering of massage, kissing and oral/manual relief with some offering anal. In keeping with the law and unlike some escorts, few will offer coital sex.

Escort Agencies & Directories
Escorts working for agencies or independent call girls are slightly different to the delivery health girls in that they are offering ‘compensated dating’. As with escorts in any country, they get around the illegality of prostitution by being compensated for their time as opposed to transacting sexual activities. As a result, many will provide coital intercourse though this is not a guarantee.
Sex in Tokyo
Tokyo’s sex scene is a thriving and diverse one offering punters the opportunity to get a blowjob in a salon (pinsaro), a happy ending rub and tug service (health massage) and companionship with more at hostess bars, KTVs and soaplands. You’ll also find a number of Japanese swinger clubs, both online and offline.
There are even ‘snack’ bars set up to provide manual relief.
There is something for everyone and plenty in between, all available at varying budgets. The majority of women working in the industry are Japanese though there is a high prevalence of Chinese women. European and other Asian nationalities are represented in the escort trade but not so much in the adult establishments; strip clubs are an exception to this.
When exploring a red light district like Kabukicho (see below), the choice can be overwhelming but it is not always easy to see which venues are offering sexual services. Fortunately, the Japanese have a solution for that. Look for the ‘R18’ logo which should be prominently displayed on a business frontage.
It has two palms held out in a cautionary way centred around the number 18. These are sometimes accompanied by signs written in English that indicate ‘Japanese Only’ or ‘No Foreigners’.
Tokyo Brothels
Traditional bordellos are illegal in Japan but you can find venues which provide similar services.
Brothels in Tokyo are known by many other names including sex clubs, soaplands, pinsaros and image clubs, massage parlours. All of them offer slightly different services but none are permitted to offer coital intercourse.
Instead, you will find a range of soft services such as manual relief (happy ending massage) and ‘snack bars’ through to medium services including oral via the soaplands. Intercourse is usually only available through an escort and this may well be oral or anal only.
Some of the escorts agencies offer an in-call service as well, including the Tokyo Hentai Club.
Love Hotels
You can choose between a ‘stay’ and a ‘rest’ at a love hotel with rates charged by the hour. Originally offering young couples the chance to have sex without being in the family home. Most are modern and offer good facilities with rates varying depending on where they are located and how long you stay for. Expect to pay in the region of 3000 ($27) to 7000 Yen ($63).
Most are easy to spot with kitsch and brightly lit neon signage with tell-tale names like the ‘Hotel Casa Nova’. They often have vending machines inside with a good range of sex toys, porn and novelty items. Some are also well-stocked with DVD players, karaoke machines and mini-bars.
Dogenzaka in Shibuya has a high number of these short term hotels, earning itself the nickname ‘Love Hotel Hill’. However, you can find them around the city and if you pick up a prostitute they will usually have a preferred love hotel for you to use. Be aware that you will need to pick up the cost of the room in addition to her service fees.
Blowjob Bars/Pink Salons
Also known as pinsaros and pink salons, blowjob bars are quick service stores that provide oral relief (usually for a set time of 20-30 minutes). They can legally operate as long as there are no private rooms and shower facilities. As a result, the system is a basic one; you arrive, pay for your playtime and either select a girl (this costs extra) or take whoever is available. You are then seated in a semi-private or less than private seat. Sometimes a curtain is drawn around you. Your host will clean your genitals with a warm towel or give you a light sponge down before starting the service. Some hosts will be topless and let you touch them, most will not.
If you can afford it, it is worth paying extra for the Hanabira Kaiten service. This is where more than one girl performs oral with two or more ladies swapping out for each other during the blowjob. It can be a distraction for some but it can also be a surprisingly rewarding experience.
There are literally hundreds of pinsaros in Tokyo with most being situated in the red light districts (see below); however, not all of them service foreigners and the service at some can be pretty poor. We’ve given you a selection of those bars that are amenable to foreigners and where some English is spoken.
For a more detailed review of these salons and the procedure, see our Japanese Blowjob Bar Guide.
Twin Tail
7 – 5 Nishi Kamata Ota Ward, Tokyo 144 – 0051 Tokyo
Twin Tail is situated in the south of the city in the Kamata Ota ward. It is known for having some better looking girls than some other budget blow job bars as well as offering longer service as standard. However, as with many of these bars, satisfaction very much depends on the girl you end up with. It does service gaijins though.
Rates are as follows for a 35 minute ‘playtime’ plus a 2000 Yen ($18) nomination fee for your choice of girl:
- Before 6.00pm: 6000 Yen ($54)
- Before 9.00pm: 7000 Yen ($63)
- After 9.00pm: 8000 Yen ($72)
The salon is open from midday until late.
Happy Hinomaru
3F Ashibe-Kaikan, 2-36-3 Kabukicho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, 160-0021
Situated in Kabukicho, Happy Hinomaru is known for being foreigner-friendly and offers a mid-price blowjob with a reasonable selection of ladies. Compared to some bars, the standard of the ladies is much higher for not much more money.
They offer a selection of blowjobs from a menu board with a standard suck off being 4,320 Yen ($38) which lasts 20-minutes. This includes a nomination fee of your choice of lady.
They offer a loyalty card system with points earned for each visit so you can get a free service with a full card.
The salon is a few minutes walk from the Shinjuku Toho Building with signage written in Engilsh.
They are open from midday until late.
Jan Jan
Sugamo Ward
A very foreigner friendly pinsaro in the Sugamo shopping district not far from the Rikugien Gardens. It offers budget blowjobs for 3000 ($27) yen before 6pm or 4000 ($36) yen after. Jan Jan is well known by western tourists.
The quality of the service is known for being good but the girls are not the hottest you can find in the city. Leave the Sugamo station via the south exit and walk down the side street off the main roundabout marked by two ‘No Entry’ signs into, what is known locally as, blowjob alley. Jan Jan is on the right hand side of the street under a large red sign which has ‘B1’ written underneath the Japanese writing.
The salon is open from midday to midnight.
Salon Flamingo
4-14 Higashidamachi Kawasaki-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture 210-0005
http://kawasaki-flamingo.com/system.php
Flamingo is foreigner friendly pinsaro but some level of Japanese is needed as the staff don’t speak much English. Many of the younger and more cute girls won’t service gaijins but some do. If you are lucky then you will get more than just a blowjob with some letting you touch, lick and suck their breasts. DFK is also a possibility.
- Before 6.00pm: 6000 Yen ($54)
- Before 9.00pm: 7000 Yen ($63)
- After 9.00pm: 8000 Yen ($72)
Flamingo is open from 10.00am to midnight.
Dio
Gotanda
Located in the Gotanda area, you can find Dio’s quite easily using the route information on their website. The shop has blue signage with an English translation and is just a short walk from Gotanda station.
Foreigners don’t generally get a choice but rather have to take who is available. Standard service costs 7000 Yen ($63) for 40 minutes but it does include two different women.
There is also a second bar alongside Dio called Emotion so don’t be surprised if you are taken to a different venue. This might be because they are busy in one.
Reviews are variable, and the ladies do range in size, age and type with gaijins often getting the plumper and older girls. Feedback tends to suggest that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover with some of the older girls being more experienced and offering a very satisfying blowjob.
Both Dio and Emotion are open daily from midday to midnight.
Soaplands
Soaplands are the closest thing to a bordello you will find in Japan and are an interesting mix of a spa and water brothel.
They are used a lot by Japanese salarymen looking to unwind after a day’s work where they are treated to some luxurious attention by a hostess. Services and rates vary by venue but the general system is straightforward. Pay on arrival including a nomination fee if you have a specific girl you would like. You then enjoy a private session which starts with a bath where the girl lathers you up.
You receive massage (mat work) and manual stimulation plus oral or simulated sex (sumata). Some soaplands do offer vaginal sex but remember that this is illegal.
- Chateau Petrus, 4 Chome-41-10 Senzoku, Taitō-ku, Tōkyō-to 111-0031
- Atelier Naniwa, 4-32-6 Senju, Taito-ku, Tokyo
- Shinjuku Corner Prawn/Kadoebi Soap Land
- Secretary’s Office, 4-26-11 Senjyo, Taito-ku, Tokyo
- President Club
- Fuchu Derby, 2-8-20 Wakamatsu-cho, Fuchu-shi, Tokyo
- AAA Soapland, Kannai Naka-ku, Yokohama (see our full Yokohama guide)
There are also plenty of these soapy salons around the red light districts, again not all servicing gaijins. Yoshiwara has the highest density of soaplands in the city with about 60.
Most have a doorman who will make it clear from the off whether the venue is gaijin-friendly. If they are, then expect to be shown a menu of the girls available. This is usually done via an iPad so if you spot a guy coming towards you with one then you know what to expect.
You could also try these which do have some good reviews from western tourists:
- Pepper Mint, tokyo taitoku senzoku 4-23-7
- Kings Club, Tokyo Senzoku 4-23-5
- Silky Doll, 4 Chome-31-1 Senzoku Taito, Tokyo
- Satin Doll,
- Pretty Girl, Senzoku 4-16-10 Taito-ku Yoshiwara
- Dream 7000, Senzoku 4-43-14 Taito-ku Yoshiwara
Karaoke Bars/ KTVS
KTVs are popular in Asia as a means of family entertainment as well as those that offer more adult experiences. Whilst there are a lot of karaoke bars in Tokyo, not all provide additional adult services.
Ostensibly private rooms which provide personal karaoke machines with drinks, snacks and the option to have a host to join you for an evening, KTVs are very popular with Japanese salarymen.
Most require a basic understanding of Japanese to be able to order what you want.
Here are a couple of suggestions of places to try in Tokyo:

Image Clubs
Image clubs offer a taste of something uniquely Japanese and gives men a way to explore the fantasy and roleplay aspect of sexual services.
Specialist venues, an image club provides more of an experience than a service. Women who work in image clubs are often paid more than a similar hostess as they are skilled performers. Some image clubs simply offer the same service as an escort but with the addition of costume and some role play and/or accessories; these are often known as fashion clubs. However, there are some high-end image clubs that provide a much more immersive experience which can include some elaborate staging and role play.
The point of these clubs is not principally one of sex, though manual/oral relief is often provided. They are a curious cultural pastime in which it is common for Japanese salarymen to live out a fantasy. This can be based around school girls, office co-workers, medical facilities or public transport. One club has a life-size train carriage in which to perform this service.
Whilst most are only open for Japanese guests, there are some that are open to foreign visitors, though usually only if they speak Japanese. It is an understandable condition given that role play requires a degree of improvisation and conversation.
Orchid
Tokyo Toshima-ku, Ikebukuro 2-40-4 Tokiwa Building 5F
Orchid is an image club that can provide a wide-range of role-play services but they specialise in incest play and Japanese housewives. They charge an admission fee of 3,000 Yen ($27) with service rates being:
Duration | Charge |
50 minutes | 10,000 Yen ($90) |
60 minutes | 12,000 Yen ($110) |
80 minutes | 16,000 Yen ($147) |
100 minutes | 20,000 Yen ($180) |
120 minutes | 24,000 Yen ($220) |
Orchid is open daily from 9.00am to midnight.
Tachikawa Office Harrasment
2 – chome Akeisho – cho, Tachikawa – shi, Tokyo – 21 – 10
No prizes for guessing what the specialty of this image club is! It’s a high-end venue which offers salarymen the opportunity to live out their fantasy of sexually harassing a female colleague. Yes… slightly crazy. It is a popular choice for locals and includes oral relief as well as ball licking.
You pay an admission charge of 3,000 Yen ($27) with serve fees being charged as follows:
Duration | New Visitors | Members |
50 minutes | 16,000 Yen ($150) | 13,000 Yen ($120) |
70 minutes | 22,000 Yen ($200) | 18,000 Yen ($165) |
90 minutes | 28,000 Yen ($257) | 23,000 Yen ($210) |
110 minutes | 34,000 Yen ($315) | 28,000 Yen ($257) |
150 minutes | 46,000 Yen ($422) | 39,000 Yen ($358) |
Odaizuri Girl’s School
2-5-6 Koto Bridge Sumida-ku, Tokyo
http://onedarigakuin.com/index.html
Another popular image club fantasy is school girls and this venue offers just that.
There is a good selection of ladies to choose from and an equally broad range of uniforms and scenarios. You can opt to seduce a school girl in role as a teacher or undertake some ‘education’ of your own. The play areas are all set-up to replicate a school environment.
As with other venues, you pay an initial admission charge of 2000 Yen ($18) plus a booking fee of 1000 Yen ($9) if you want to select a specific girl.
Prices are then charged as follows depending on the duration of your session:
Duration | Charge |
40 minutes | 12,000 Yen ($110) |
60 minutes | 17,000 Yen ($155) |
80 minutes | 23,000 Yen ($210) |
100 minutes | 29,000 Yen ($265) |
The Odaizuri Girl’s School is open daily from 10.00am to midnight.
Gotanda Uniform Heaven
Tokyo Higashi Gomonda Shinagawa-ku, 1-20-4 M Stage 2F

Duration | Charge |
40 minutes | 11,000 Yen ($100) |

Erotic Massage Parlors
All of the red light areas (see below) have erotic massage parlors. Known as health massage or health spas, there are lots of different services available. From standard erotic and relaxation massage with a straightforward happy ending to specialist lingham massage which focuses almost entirely on the penis, testicles and perineum.
Most health massage venues will also have a couple of optional services which make them stand out from your basic escort, soapland or prostitute pick-up. These can include:
- Full naked body slide with oils
- Shower massage
- Prostate massage
- The upper-body lick
- Facesitting
- Kaishun
You can, of course, arrange an out-call service to your choice of a hotel or love hotel for an erotic massage plus the soaplands also provide elements of this service.
As ever, the health massage parlors in Tokyo don’t all accept business from gaijins.

Strip Clubs
You will find that most of the best strip clubs in Tokyo are located in the high-end entertainment district of Roppongi but you can also find some good ones in Kabukicho.
The ones below are foreigner friendly but are quite expensive. They offer a more European style strip and gentleman’s club experience.
Seventh Heaven

Seventh Heaven is a popular spot for Japanese and European businessmen as well as tourists and can be quite a busy venue.

Entrance is 4000-5000 Yen ($36-$45) depending on what time you arrive but drinks are quite reasonable for a capital city strip club. However, the bill can add up, particularly if you get carried away with lap dance and ‘personal experiences’.
The club is open from 11.00am to 11.00pm.
Best of the Rest
Some of these strip clubs offer a lot more in the way of adult entertainment and can be an eye-opener. Some are more welcoming of foreigners than others whilst some may prefer you to speak some Japanese.

Street Prostitutes & Red Light Districts
There are many areas around Tokyo which have a reputation for their sex-industry (or fūzoku) and are known as red-light districts.
Most of these areas have a high proportion of adult orientated businesses and are places where you can find hookers. You can pick up a street prostitute from around 10,000 Yen ($90) for an hour plus the cost of a room at a love hotel. However, you need to bear in mind that some women charge significantly less for companion services just to keep you company whilst you have a few drinks in a bar.
Most of the girls you will find are Japanese but there are other nationalities working here too. Japanese ladies tend to charge more than their international counterparts.
Kabukicho
The biggest and best known red-light area in Tokyo is Kabukicho. Situated in the Shinjuku area, this tiny district measures only 0.34 km2 yet has around 3,500 fūzoku venues. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Sleepless Town’, Kabukicho is named after the popular Japanese style of theater, Kabuki after a theater was planned for the area in the 1940s. It’s a densely packed and bustling area filled with porno shops, karaoke and hostess bars, strip clubs and soaplands.
You can easily spend all of your time in Tokyo simply exploring and trying to navigate the seemingly endless services and novelties available in Kabukicho. As well as the types of venue listed above you can even watch shows where sexy girls ride provocatively atop giant robot beasts. The general rule of thumb is, if you can imagine it, it probably happens in Kabukicho.
To the north of the main red-light area of Kabukicho is Ōkubo Park which has a reputation for foreign street walkers.
Other Red Light Areas
Situated in the Shinigawa ward, Gotanda is an active spot for many sex related businesses including pink salons and health massage services. By day, you wouldn’t necessarily notice the comparison to Kabukicho but by night this busy commercial area is transformed. It’s a relatively small area but one that gets very busy. The benefit for some visitors is that it can more easily and quickly be navigated than Kabukicho.
Dogenzaka in Shibuya has a number of red-light businesses and is known as ‘Love Hotel Hill’. Dogenzaka has plenty of hotels where you can book in for a ‘rest’ with a love buddy and the area has plenty of professionals who make use of this. There are sex clubs here too but most of them are Japanese only.
Senzoku 4 Chōme covers the area that was formerly known as Yoshiwara. In the 17th century, this district of Tokyo was part of the city of Edo. The area has a long history of prostitution and has had a reputation for being a pleasure district for over 400 years. Though the area cannot rival Kabukicho, it does have a lot of fūzoku venues which line many of the streets.
Ueno is in the Taitō ward and has a reputation for being a ‘low-rent’ area of town. There is a small area to the south-west of the station which has a lot of brothels, soaplands, fashion health shops and adult stores.
Roppongi in the Minato area of Tokyo is known for its nightclubs and trendy and affluent residential developments. As a result of the high demand for night-life and attracting plenty of cash-rich foreigners there is a thriving sex scene here. Mostly you will find that this centres around strip clubs and hostess bars but you will also find street hookers here too.
Ginza in the Chūō district is less a red-light district but well known for its many hostess bars. It’s a ritzy and upmarket area of the city with plenty of clubs and the bars being very much in keeping with the classy demographic. You find that many of the bars attract businessmen, but prices are quite high here and some of the top hostesses are reported to be earning in excess of $20,000 per month.
Sex Shops
Tokyo is known for its vending machines and there is one such convenient device every 12m around the city. In the red-light areas and love hotels you will find that these machines dispense sex toys as well as other products.
Generally, Japan has some of the best selection in sex toys anywhere in the world – many of which are sold online, on sites like J-List, Kanojo Toys and OtonaJP.
Certainly, you may reassess the basic offerings of other nations once you’ve seen what is available in Tokyo.
Kabukicho has a huge selection of boutiques and stores to browse around and Dogenzaka is worth shopping around in.
