The porn industry of Japan is like no other adult market in the world and very much reflects the country’s diverse cultural views on sex and sexuality.

As a result, their pornography covers a broad spectrum of genres and although there is a ‘mainstream’ market, this is small by comparison to the combined catalog of unique fetishes and niche content.

There are a lot of kinky ways to make money from sex in Japan, and the porn industry is just one of them!

There are several niches of porn that are unique to Japan and although they may have reached a wider audience in the Western world, their roots are firmly in the JAV industry. In fact, many of these ‘specialist’ genres are not seen as niche here in Japan but are just another subcategory of adult content. The most familiar of these will be bukkake which is widely seen in the porn industries of Australia, United States and Europe. However, the domestic market also includes:

• Gokkun – named for the sound the word makes (roughly ‘gulp’ in English), gokkun porn is all about drinking cum from a cup or other container. Often combined with a bukkake scene, it is usually a woman who does this and the semen is usually from multiple men.
• Omorashi – another name for a kink that many would call urolagnia or Golden Showers, porn of this kind in Japan is actually part of a fetish subculture. Participants and audiences are aroused by seeing someone with a full bladder squirming with the discomfort of needing to pee and eventually wetting themselves. This can be part of quite a complex roleplay such as student/teacher, parent/adult ‘child’ or even incorporating public embarrassment on transport like a train or bus.
• Yaoi – Also known as ‘boy’s love’, yaoi is a type of porn that features two men in a gay relationship. Though you would be forgiven for thinking this is just homosexual porn, it is in fact uniquely targeted to an audience of young Japanese women. There are two kinds of this genre; yaoi features a submissive (or feminine) male and dominant (or masculine) male. Bara (or ‘men’s love’) is the equivalent of gay ‘bears’ where both men may be masculine. This can include hairy guys, muscled guys and larger gay men. By contrast yuri porn (or girl’s love’ covers lesbian content but is not nearly as popular as girl-on-girl action is in the West.
• Futanari – the Japanese word for ‘hermaphroditism’, futanari porn is common in hentai and anime but there is also a market for real life porn featuring hermaphrodites (sometimes transsexuals) or using prosthetic appendages.
• Anime – Animated porn is very popular in Japan and has been trending in other nations over the last few decades. According to the global giants of porn tube hosting, Pornhub, ‘hentai’ is the fourth most popular keyword used to search for content on its site.
• Geek Porn – really a sub-genre of cosplay mixed with a little parody and fandom, geek porn is all about paying tribute to popular super heroes, cartoon princesses and fantasy warriors.

Among other uniquely Japanese porn trends you can find cat slapping, ‘patience face’ (gamin kao) and pillow humping – all of these are explored in one of our recent features.

Of course, the JAV markets also cater to all of the usual porno genres including interracial, gang bang and BDSM but there has been a large increase over the last few decades in the demand for big-breasted content and mature men and women.

MILFs have always been a cornerstone of Japanese porn but ‘elder porn’, featuring much older men (in their 70s and 80s) has seen significant growth (see ‘Glory Quest’ studio below).

Another feature of the Japanese porn industry that differs from that in the Western world is that the stars of the JAV markets are predominantly female.

There are far less men working in the industry, even than in the United States and Europe. There are estimated to be only around 80-100 men working on screen in the industry full time and most do not really make names for themselves in the same way as the ladies.

There are some exceptions to this and there are a dozen or so male Japanese porn stars who are in high(er) demand. The average fees for a male porn star are much less than their female colleagues can expect to earn which may partly be the reason for this disparity.

Male, female, performer or director, some of the biggest-names in the JAV industry enjoy a phenomenal amount of adoration from their fans. Annual events like the Japan Adult Expo are a big deal and queues for autographs and selfies can be competitive. Some fans are hobbyists in this regard and collect signatures and photos of porn stars in the same way that baseball fans in America collect trading cards.

Porn Censorship Laws in Japan

A voluntary organisation formerly known as Viderin, most porn studios in Japan are members of the moral censorship group Ethics Organization of Video (previously Nihon Ethics of Video Association (NEVA)).

Adult content that bears the logo of the organisation must comply with Japanese censorship laws including pixellation of genitals; the amount of erect penis which is displayed can vary by studio and there is no hard and fast (pun intended) rule over this.

Content may not be promoted using any language that suggests the use of minors, and specifically high school girls.

Some producer try to get around this by using symbols and characters in place of one or more numbers in a films title to ‘trick’ audiences. A title like 1X-Year Old Gang Bang instead of 19-Year Old Gang Bang would pass censorship for example but could intimate the use of barely legal or younger teens.

The days of pubic hair being banned in pornography have been long gone for a while but porn released before the end of the 90s may still feature heavily pixellated areas around the genitals. Most modern porn produced in Japan carries a slimline digital mosaic which barely covers the ‘offensive’ areas. However, this kind of censorship is also in place for animated porn!

Interesting fact……the anus is not considered offensive and may be shown in its full glory until it is being, or about to be, penetrated!

They are a powerhouse in the JAV world and at their peak several years ago were producing over 1,000 new releases every year. Formats and titles vary all the time as Soft On Demand strive to stay ahead of the market and range from AV Idol Game Shows to nude sports competitions, sex camps and festivals as well as Company sex parties and an ‘elder porn’ epic, All Naked Nursing Home For the Elderly.

Content released by the studio is sometimes absurd and humorous but is never particularly ‘extreme’ like the content released by Attackers, for instance. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it well and the company earns profits in the tens of millions of dollars.

As well as porn films, the company also makes adult games, adult anime and sex products as well as mainstream movies. SOD Create remains the main porn studio for this conglomerate and this label has employed directors as diverse as Goro Tameike and Keita No. 1 to [JO] Style and Sakkun.
